She is one of my all-time favorite authors. The big battle scene at the end seemed to be missing something, maybe it just was not quite suspenseful enough and the antagonist (Skull King) really wasn't that scary. The reason this book gets only 3 stars is because for some reason I just couldn't get into it. Published in 1865, it was followed by THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS AND WHAT ALICE FOUND THERE in 1871. Highly recommend it. The characters are (mostly) teenagers.
